Starting at 9:15 am, a business meeting is followed by a presentation on such topics as HIV/AIDS, Family Systems Therapy, and Rational Emotive Behavior therapy. Meetings generally end around 11:15 am. RSVPs are not necessary.
Addiction permeates all areas of practice, so whether we are specialists or generalist practitioners, clinicians, activists or researchers, a knowledge of addiction related issues is essential for all social workers to effectively work with our clients. Addiction affects people of all ages, cultural backgrounds, and socioeconomic status, and the Addictions Committee is available to all social workers wishing to learn how to recognize and respond to addiction of all types.
The Addictions Committee provides various social work opportunities, including clinical skills development, networking and mutual support, gaining free CASAC credits, involvement in policy initiatives, and conference organizing.
The Addictions Committee has another exciting presentation on Wednesday, March 11, 2020
Topic:
Women, Substance Abuse, and Incarceration

The Threefold mission of the New York City Chapter Addictions Committee:
1. Professional Development
Monthly in-service and networking workshops as part of committee meetings for students, professionals, and all interested in the latest innovative clinical topics, good for CASAC and CEU credits.
2. Peer Support
Social workers seeking information on referral to treatment resources for alcohol or drug abuse problems or problem gambling can contact the New York State Office of Alcoholism and Substance Abuse Services screening, assessment and referral service at 1-877-8-HOPENY (1-877-846-7369)
3. Political Action and Public Policy
Through revenue produced by the Annual Addictions Institute, the committee has been able to contribute to the hiring of the Chapter Lobbyist ensuring that issues concerning addiction treatment are represented in legislation. Many committee members are on national panels and very involved in policy development and legislation. The Policy Subcommittee is working on two main goals. To promote the first one, reform of the Rockefeller Drug Laws. The second goal, expanded training and education of social workers about addiction, will involve partnering with other organizations.
