Welcome to the June issue of Currents. If you have colleagues who may not have seen the newsletter yet, please consider printing out a copy for them.
Dr. William Pollard, a social worker who currently serves as President of Medgar Evers College, delivered an inspiring keynote speech at the 55th Annual Meeting, held on Thursday, May 13, 2010; the full report begins on page six.
Licensing updates, particularly focused on the current status of the exemptions that were scheduled to end on June 1, 2010, are included in this issue of the newsletter. As Currents was being completed, the Governor was planning to extend the exemptions to June 9th to allow for time to work with the State Assembly and Senate to address concerns raised by state and local agencies about how the proposed workforce study would be implemented. See page three.
At a March 25th forum, six panelists addressed some of the most difficult challenges that social workers face every day. See page four for more details about how social workers can harness their power to positively affect working conditions.
Other highlights of this issue include reports on the activities of the Latino Social Work Task Force and the Asian American Task Force, honorary acknowledgment of the accomplishments of Dorothy Height, and a welcome to two new members of the NASW-NYC staff.
Finally, if you are interested in opportunities for institute training, our advertising section is a good resource.
As always, I am open to and interested in your feedback; email me at kliever@naswnyc.org.
Sincerely,
Launa Kliever

2010 Annual Meeting
NASW-NYC thanks the many organizations that co-sponsored the 2010 Annual Meeting and our members who contributed financially during the year 2009-2010 program year. This support enhances the Chapter's advocacy and programming.
NASW-NYC is committed to carrying out programs and activities to strengthen the social work workforce in order to ensure that the profession is able to meet the needs of New York communities and to support the capacity of social workers in the delivery of quality services.
A workshop that moves beyond a focus on the symptoms of racism to an understanding of what it is, where it comes from, how it functions, why it persists and how it can be undone.
Institutional Racism & The Social Work Profession: A Call To Action
Inspired in large part by the “Undoing Racism” Workshops in NYC, led by the People’s Institute for Survival and Beyond, this Call to Action identifies what individual social workers, schools of social work, and service agencies all need to do to address the effects of racism. Specific examples of how racism plays out in social work are included.
